AGM batteries are constructed differently than open lead-acid batteries. In AGM batteries,
there is a glass fibre mat between the plates that is saturated with acid electrolyte.
This mat is packed between the plates and compressed.
This ensures a super-fast reaction between the acid and the plates. Because the plates and mats are tightly packed, they are virtually immune to vibration.
This type of battery is maintenance-free and, under normal use, does not produce any
gas. The small amount of gas that does occur is returned to the electrolyte, so the batteries should never need to be refilled.
Furthermore, no ventilation is required and a pressure relief valve is fitted to the battery for safety.
The batteries can be installed in any position except upside down.
Due to the high production costs, these batteries are significantly more expensive than open lead-acid batteries, but still cheaper than gel batteries.
